‘Triple Trouble Times Ten.’

Every dream has a Dream Master – to control the dream. But Cy has such a vivid imagination that he has met his Dream Master and can travel with him through Time and Space to live his dreams.

It’s Triple Trouble Time, though, when Cy begins a school project on volcanoes.

Scotland, 1915. A group of teenagers from two families meet for a picnic, but the war across the Channel is soon to tear them away from such youthful pleasures. All too soon, the horror of what is to become known as The Great War engulfs them, their friends and the whole village. From the horror of the trenches, to the devastating reality seen daily by those nursing the wounded, they struggle to survive - and nothing will ever be the same again.

A powerful and engrossing novel about love and war, from Carnegie Medal-winning author Theresa Breslin.

Audio edition read by Frances Thorburn and Gary Bakewell

The Great War

How do you react when the country is swept by war fever? If you’re young and eager to fight for your country with your older neighbours and friends. Would you forge the date on your birth certificate and run away from home?

What if you don’t believe in the senseless slaughter of young men in the name of politics and empire – what do you do when others label you a coward?

Rights for Women

In a world where women have few rights and aren’t consulted on the important topics of the day, would you have the strength to use the opportunity of war to stretch your mind and grasp the possibilities that it opens up? Could you leave the safety of your family and challenge the way the world works?

Love

How can love survive in the horrific conditions of loss and bereavement that a world war results in? What can you do in the face of death?

All these issues are faced by the young men and women of Stratharden, for whom life after the war will never be the same again.

Not you. What I say goes. And I say this dream is gone, so beat it.’

There are good dreams and there are rotten dreams, and once they’re over, they’re over. Or are they?… For one morning, as Cy is about to wake up from a terrific dream about Ancient Egypt, he discovers that he can get back into his dream world. There’s just one problem: the Dream Master, who isn’t used to stroppy boys standing up to him and wanting to break all the rules. And as Cy moves back and forth between the present day and the land of the pharaohs – sorting out all kinds of problems with schoolwork and bullies – dream life and real life become ingeniously intertwined!

‘There is hope. One should never give up.’

For Kezzie, the war began when the German planes fired at the cruise liner on which she was traveling home from Canada to Scotland. Yet she and her younger sister, Lucy, find that they have some months to enjoy their time reunited with Grandad in Clydebank before the war starts in earnest.

Soon, however, the family spirit is put to the test. Kezzie’s strength is needed by so many. First, she has to save an Italian family from the racial hatred they encounter, then she rescues her old school friend Peg. But as Clydebank becomes a burning inferno, will Kezzie be strong enough to turn a tragedy into a triumph?
